Tenor Horn & Flugel Tutor
Owen Farr

Owen's involvement with brass music began in Wales at the age of six when he joined the Pontypool Brass Band. He later became a member of the Gwent County Youth Brass Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, progressing to principal horn with both ensembles. Owen's emerging talent was recognised in 1995, when he became the British Open Junior Solo champion. He was later appointed solo horn with the Tredegar Town Band, before moving to England to study at the Royal Northern College of Music. Six months later, he joined the world famous Williams' Fairey Band, with whom he enjoyed a great deal of success before moving back to the Land of his Father’s to take the position of solo horn with the Champion Band of Wales, ‘Cory’.

2002 saw the first step towards Owen’s development as a leading tenor horn pedagogue. Upon graduation from the RNCM his talents in this field were immediately recognised by his appointment to the RNCM staff as a specialist tenor horn tutor. During the same year he also accepted a teaching post at the University of Liverpool and now lectures at both the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Owen is dedicated to improving teaching methods for the instrument he loves and is now widely recognised as the UK’s leading tenor horn clinician.

In addition to Owen’s commitment to music education, he has a busy schedule as both soloist and chamber musician. He is a founder member of the renowned quintet ‘Sonar Brass’ and with this dynamic ensemble has performed in prestigious venues and festivals throughout the UK. As a soloist Owen has performed with many of the UK’s finest bands and in 2006 premiered concerti by Gareth Wood & Lucy Pankhurst. His performances have taken him throughout Europe and have been heard on S4C television, BBC Radio 2’s ‘Listen to the Band’ and the world's longest-running live music radio program, ‘Friday Night is Music Night’.

Owen is constantly raising awareness for the tenor horn; lyrical tone quality and stunning technical precision have become his trade mark. He is a consultant and clincican for York Musical Instruments, he has a successful solo series with publishing house Prima Vista Musikk, and has recorded his first solo album entitled ‘Untold Stories’ to great acclaim.
