An integral part of the BBSS

Clockwise from top left we have: Aiden Howgate, Chris Cannings, Michelle Taylor & Liz Lancaster.

There are many aspects of the Brass Band Summer School which are often unnoticed, but in reality are integral for the smooth running of this successful music course.

To make music we need sheet music, and literally thousands of parts need to be organised into individual folders for delegates to enjoy their musical experience from the very first rehearsal. Aiden Howgate makes this possible - he is a talented B-flat bass player, but he is also the Brass Band Summer School’s very own Librarian.

The Brass Band Summer School has three bands which all rehearse at different times, in different formations throughout the day. As a successful course we often have large numbers requiring a large amount of chairs and music stands, all of which need to be organised and set out prior to every rehearsal. This can be a logistical nightmare, but not with Chris Cannings in charge! Chris is a stalwart of the BBSS having attended every single course since its formation. Not only does he contribute musically through his flugel horn playing, he also ensures the rehearsal facility is ready for each and every rehearsal and is the Brass Band Summer School’s official photographer.

The Brass Band Summer School works hard to provide a great experience for all delegates. No matter what the problem, there will always be someone on hand to help, and invariably it will be Liz Lancaster or Michelle Taylor! These great personalities assist with all aspects of the summer school throughout the week and also contribute on a musical level - Liz plays cornet and Michelle plays tenor horn.
